Eero Saarinen Tulip Armchair

The innovative shape of the Eero Saarinen Tulip Armchair is as fresh and current today as it was when it was launched over 50-years ago. Our reproduction has become one of our bestsellers, perfectly capturing the features and quality of the original. The coloured cushions provides a beautiful contrast to the white, glossy fibreglass shell. The base is constructed from sturdy cast moulded aluminium and allows the chair to swivel so you have full range of movement.

The story behind the Tulip Chair

The Tulip Armchair was first presented in 1958, when Eero Saarinen introduced his 'Pedestal Collection'. The collection came as the result of a 5-year investigation into addressing what Saarinen saw as the 'slum of legs' under tables. By getting rid of the traditional 4 legs, Saarinen opened up the space and gave people more room to stretch out.

1910 (Finland) -1961 (United States)

A Finnish American architect and industrial designer, Eero Saarinen took a sculptural approach to furniture design. He was a perfectionist who was obsessed with getting the perfect curve or line, often building hundreds of models to ensure he got it right. His attention to detail paid off. His work is now iconic and includes design classics such as the Tulip Armchair, the Tulip Table and the Womb Chair.

"Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context - a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan."
